When JPG to PNG makes sense

Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more quality. Converting to PNG first means later edits are saved losslessly. PNG is also required by some apps and upload forms. Note that converting does not add transparency on its own - to remove a background, use our transparent PNG maker.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No - it keeps the quality the JPG already has and stops it getting worse with future edits. It cannot restore detail that was lost.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, so photos take more space than in JPG. That is the trade-off for lossless editing.
Can I make the background transparent?
Use the transparent PNG maker - it removes the background with AI and saves a PNG with transparency.
