Private by design: your photo is never stored

Your full-resolution photo stays on your device. Only a reduced copy (no larger than 1024 pixels) is sent over an encrypted connection to our own server, where the AI works out which pixels belong to the subject. That copy is processed in memory and discarded straight away - it is never saved to disk, never kept and never shared with anyone else. The finished cut-out is then put together on your device at full resolution.

The cut-out is made by IS-Net, an open-source AI model built for high-accuracy image segmentation, running on our own hardware rather than a third-party service.

Tips for the cleanest cut-out

  • Use a photo where the subject is in focus and clearly separated from the background.
  • Good, even lighting helps more than a high resolution.
  • Fine hair and fur are handled well, but very busy backgrounds can leave small patches - a plain wall or sky gives the best result.
  • For marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, choose a pure white (#FFFFFF) background.

Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There are no credits, no signup and no watermark. To keep it fast for everyone there is a generous fair-use limit of 40 photos per hour.
Are my images uploaded or stored?
A reduced copy of your photo (at most 1024 pixels) is sent securely to our own server so the AI can find the outline. It is processed in memory and deleted immediately - never saved, never kept and never shared with third parties. Your original full-resolution photo does not leave your device.
How long does it take?
Usually a few seconds. The upload is small because only a reduced copy is sent, and the final full-resolution cut-out is assembled on your own device.
What file do I get?
A full-resolution PNG. If you keep the background transparent, the PNG has a transparent background; if you choose a colour, it is filled in. You can convert it to WebP or JPG with our image converter.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It works in current versions of Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, including HEIC photos straight from an iPhone.
Can I use the result commercially?
Yes. The images are yours. The tool adds nothing to them, and the AI model it uses is released under a licence that allows commercial use.
