The Strategic Role of an AI Language Learning App

Duolingo Max solves the problem of moving from tap-through lessons to real conversation practice. Roleplay lets you practice real-world conversations with in-app characters, such as ordering coffee with Lin or furniture shopping with Eddy. Video Call with Lily provides on-demand video calls with the character Lily. These features target learners who want speaking practice, not just vocabulary drills. Max is available only on mobile and only for specific language combos. Within the broader AI Education & Learning Tools space, Duolingo Max sits specifically in the conversation-practice niche rather than general course content.

Who Should Use Duolingo Max?

• Mobile learners Learners who study primarily on iOS or Android, since Max cannot be purchased or accessed on the web platform at all.
• Learners of supported language combos English speakers learning French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, or Italian, and English for Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, German, or French speakers.
• Speaking practice seekers Learners who want real conversation practice through Roleplay and Video Call with Lily, beyond tap-through lessons.
• Families Families who want to share a Max plan with up to 5 others (6 total) via the Family plan at about $200 per year.

Readers wanting a fully free option might also compare Khan Academy before committing to a paid tier.

Professional reality: The real limitation is that Max is mobile-only and AI features are not available on every course, so web users and learners of unsupported languages cannot access the full experience.

Is Duolingo Max Worth It?

Duolingo Max is worth it for mobile learners in supported language combos who want real conversation practice through Roleplay and Video Call with Lily.
